Good morning everyone!
So a few days ago I posted that I bought a few bananas, 1/2 gallon of milk and 3 peaches and would tell you the cost later…. well later has come ~
:S :/ :O (sorry for anyone who is annoyed by emoticons!)
The price of groceries is astronomical here, and in some ways it is moderately balanced by the higher levels of income – but for the most part, I think a lot of people struggle with the higher prices here. It’s really sad – and I would guess, it is one of the main culprits in the health status and prevalence of obesity here 🙁
It is so hard to get good fresh fruits and vegetables to this region – and when they do arrive they are not always in their tastiest state. This leads people to believe fresh produce doesn’t taste good – which is a travesty! I don’t blame these residents in feeling as though buying processed, pre-packaged food is the only choice they have; but this (as everyone knows) opens up a huge can of beans (sometimes literally! HA!) since processed foods are so much lower in nutrients, higher in calories, fat, sodium, cholesterol, etc. etc.
It will definitely be a struggle to maintain a healthful diet while I’m here! But this struggle will be a blessing in disguise as I will be much better able to understand and empathizes with the majority of the population here and can *hopefully* come up with some solutions to help everyone eat a bucketload of nutrients on a budget!
Wish me luck, and if anyone has any economical and healthy meal/snack ideas or recipes I would love love love your input!
Happy Saturday lovely people!
