Come & Get it! (the summer lunch story)

Let’s talk summer lunch, shall we?

Last week I was on Summer Lunch duty (I was on first shift which made it a little more stressful). Three interns are on duty at a time and we work 8am – 1pm Monday through Thursday.

Summer Lunch is a program for low income families (which, with the cost of living being so outrageously high in Nome – everyone can technically qualify). It serves a full hot meal every day; this means that every food group must be met in the correct quantities – 2-4 oz. protein, 1/2 cup veggies, etc.

The meals are on a three week schedule. We interns do not plan and/or modify the meals or recipes (unfortunately – I’d love to get my hands on that!). We just show up, get our meal plan for the day and cook. it. up. 🙂

At about 11, the daycare across the street comes to pick up their meals and then at noon the children arrive for their food! We serve their dinner, take a count (so the meals can be reimbursed) and then clean up.

There are a few bumps I wish could be ironed out… a few issues that have come up are the health value of the meals, finding meals the children will eat and enjoy, all while maintaining a budget since grocery prices are astronomical!
